GA4 report showing form leads and Tag Manager events

In short: to count leads rather than rankings, send GA4 events for successful form submissions and for clicks on phone and messenger links, mark them as key events and pass them to Google Ads. The most reliable method for forms is a dataLayer event fired after the server confirms the submission.

What counts as a lead?

A visitor action that leads to contact: a successful form submit, a click on tel:, mailto:, Telegram or WhatsApp, or opening a chat. Track each type as a separate event so you can see what works.

Why not track only the "thank you" page view?

Many sites submit forms via AJAX with no page reload, so there is no thank-you page. Even if one exists, it can be reopened and count a lead twice. It's safer to fire the event when the server confirms receipt.

How do you set up a form event?

  1. In the form code, after a successful response, add:
    window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
    window.dataLayer.push({ event: 'lead_form_success', form_name: 'audit' });
  2. In GTM, create a "Custom Event" trigger named lead_form_success.
  3. Create a "Google Analytics: GA4 Event" tag with event name generate_lead and a form_name parameter.
  4. Attach the tag to the trigger and publish the container.

How do you track calls and messengers?

Create a "Click — Just Links" trigger where Click URL starts with tel:, mailto:, https://t.me/ or https://wa.me/. Use a separate GA4 event tag for each type (for example click_phone, click_telegram).

How do you make an event a key event?

In GA4: Admin → Events → mark generate_lead and other events as key events. Key events are what reports treat as conversions and what you can import into Google Ads.

How do you verify it works?

  • GTM Preview (Tag Assistant): the tag should fire exactly once.
  • GA4 DebugView: the event arrives with the right parameters.
  • After a day, check the Events report.

Add UTM parameters to ad links so leads are attributed to the right sources. If your site has a cookie banner, configure Consent Mode so analytics follows the visitor's choice.

FAQ

How are key events different from conversions?

In 2024 Google renamed GA4 "conversions" to "key events". The idea is the same: events that matter to the business.

Can you track leads without a developer?

Simple link clicks, yes. For AJAX forms, involve a developer so the event fires after server confirmation.

Why does GA4 show fewer leads than the CRM?

Common causes: ad blockers, declined cookies and trigger errors. Reconcile the data regularly.
