In short: to launch Google Shopping you need a Merchant Center account, a high-quality product feed, a website that matches the feed and a link to Google Ads. Most problems come not from ads but from feed data and account review.

What is Google Shopping?

Product listings with a photo, price and store name shown in Google Search, the Shopping tab and other surfaces. The data comes from a feed you upload to Merchant Center. Visibility is possible for free (organic product listings) and paid through Google Ads.

What do you need to start?

  1. A Google Merchant Center account with a verified domain.
  2. A product feed (XML, spreadsheet or a CMS export).
  3. Shipping, payment and returns pages plus contact details on your site.
  4. A Google Ads account linked to Merchant Center (for paid campaigns).
  5. GA4 with transaction tracking so you can see sales.

Which feed attributes are required?

Core fields: id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, brand. Most products also need gtin or mpn, and certain categories require condition, color, size, gender and age_group. The exact list depends on the category, so check it against Merchant Center help.

How do you optimise the feed?

  • Titles: brand + product type + key attribute (model, colour, size).
  • Images: sharp, on a neutral background, without watermarks or text overlays.
  • Categories: use Google's taxonomy, not your own labels.
  • Price and availability: must match what the shopper sees on the page.
  • Updates: scheduled, at least daily for stores with changing stock.

Why does Merchant Center disapprove products or accounts?

Typical causes: price or availability mismatch between feed and site, missing shipping and returns pages, incomplete contact details, low-quality images, missing product identifiers, or a suspected misrepresentation. Read the error in Diagnostics, fix the root cause and request a re-review.

How do you track results?

Connect GA4 and transaction conversions. Look at revenue and margin by product group, not just clicks. Products with no impressions and those spending budget without sales belong in separate groups or should be excluded.

FAQ

Can you appear in Google Shopping for free?

Yes, through free product listings in Merchant Center when your feed and site meet the requirements. Paid campaigns give more control and reach.

How long does review take?

Usually from a few days, but timing depends on data quality and repeat reviews.

Do you need a separate feed per language?

For multilingual sites, separate data per language and country performs better. The feed language must match the page language.
