In short: to appear in AI answers, your site must be indexed, answer specific questions clearly, use Schema.org markup and show real expertise. There is no secret trick for chatbots: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is strong SEO plus content that is easy to quote.

What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?

GEO means shaping pages so they become a source in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar systems. SEO competes for a position in a list; GEO competes for a mention or link inside a finished answer. The foundation is the same: indexing, relevance and trust.

Are there special technical requirements?

Google states that no extra requirements apply for AI features: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Start with the basics:

  • the page is crawlable and not blocked by noindex;
  • key text exists in the HTML, not only after heavy JavaScript;
  • pages are fast and stable (see our Core Web Vitals guide).

How do you let AI bots in?

Check robots.txt. Search bots of AI products (for example OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot) differ from training crawlers (GPTBot). If you want visibility in answers, don't block the search bots. Whether to allow training bots is a separate business decision. llms.txt is not a confirmed ranking factor, so don't rely on it.

How should you write content that gets cited?

  1. Answer first. Put a direct 1–3 sentence answer under each question heading, then add detail.
  2. Question-style H2s. Phrase headings the way people ask in a chat.
  3. Specifics. Lists, steps, tables, thresholds. Vague text is rarely quoted.
  4. One idea per paragraph. Models extract self-contained passages more easily.
  5. Author and date. Show who wrote the page and when it was updated.

Which markup helps?

Schema.org in JSON-LD: Organization, Article, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage, and Product with Offer for stores. Markup doesn't guarantee citations, but it removes ambiguity about who you are, what you offer and where you operate.

Why does trust matter most?

Generative systems favour sources that appear consistently across the web. What helps: brand mentions on relevant sites, reviews, case studies with real outcomes, an About page with names and experience, and identical company data everywhere.

How do you measure results?

Once a month, run your key queries in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity and record whether your brand appears, whether it is linked, and what was quoted. In Search Console, track impressions and clicks on informational queries. Treat it as a repeatable process, not a one-off audit.

FAQ

Does GEO guarantee appearing in AI answers?

No. Nobody can guarantee citations. You can raise your chances through indexing, clear answers, markup and authority.

Does GEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Most AI systems rely on a search index, so weak SEO means weak GEO.

How long until results show?

It depends on your niche and current site state. Technical fixes work faster; trust builds over months.
